The JioCinema series “Murder in Mahim,” based on Jerry Pinto’s novel of the same name, delves into the complexities of same-sex relationships in India before the landmark 2018 Supreme Court ruling decriminalizing such relations. Adapted for the screen by Mustafa Neemuchwala and Udai Singh Pawar, and directed by Raj Acharya, the series explores themes of shame, blackmail, and the consequences of homophobia.
Set against the backdrop of Mumbai’s Mahim railway station, the series follows the investigation of a gruesome murder involving Proxy, a man found dead in a public toilet frequented by men seeking clandestine encounters. Vijay Raaz portrays Shiva, a principled police officer leading the investigation, alongside Shivani Raghuvanshi as his assistant Firdaus. The case takes unexpected turns as it uncovers Proxy’s connections to Sunil, the son of retired journalist Peter, played by Ashutosh Rana.
While the adaptation expands on the novel with additional subplots and characters, it maintains a focus on the harsh realities faced by LGBTQ individuals in a society rife with prejudice and discrimination. Through the characters of Shiva and Peter, portrayed respectively by Raaz and Rana, the series explores the personal journeys of two middle-aged men forced to confront their own biases and preconceptions.
Despite some narrative inconsistencies and an overstretched runtime, “Murder in Mahim” effectively highlights the unjust treatment of LGBTQ individuals and the urgent need for societal acceptance and understanding. The performances of Raaz and Rana, along with strong supporting turns from Rajesh Khattar and Ashitosh Gaikwad, anchor the series in its exploration of love, loss, and the pursuit of justice.
