A police investigation into actor Matthew Perry’s death has been launched after it was ruled an accident.
Perry, who played Chandler Bing in the hit US sitcom from 1994 until it ended a decade later, died aged 54 in October last year.
His cause of death was later ruled to be an accident due to ‘drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine’ as well as ketamine usage.
Seven months after Perry died, the Los Angeles Police Department has confirmed it is working with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
It told the PA News Agency it has teamed up with the DEA on the ‘open investigation’ into the circumstances of Perry’s death.
The investigation will reportedly look at how the general anaesthetic was obtained by the actor, who also starred in films including 17 Again.
Perry was found ‘unresponsive in the pool at his residence’ in Los Angeles on October 28.
The County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner said in December that Perry died from the ‘acute effects of ketamine’ and said the manner of death was ‘an accident.’
The report said Perry was receiving ‘ketamine infusion therapy for depression and anxiety,’ with his last known treatment one and a half weeks before his death, and suggested he had been ‘reportedly clean for 19 months’ from drug use.
‘The ketamine in his system at death could not be from that infusion therapy,’ the ruling said.
The report was not able to specify the ‘exact method of intake’ in Perry’s case.
Perry was open about his was open about his battle with substance abuse and addiction and had set up a sober living facility for men with similar issues.
Jennifer Aniston, his Friends co-star and close friend, revealed how she had spoken to him on the day of his death and revealed he seemed ‘healthy.’
‘He was happy. he was healthy. He had quit smoking,’ the Rachel Green actress told Variety in December.
‘He was happy – that’s all I know. I was literally texting with him that morning, funny Matty. He was not in pain. He wasn’t struggling. He was happy.’
She continued: ‘I want people to know he was really healthy, and getting healthy. He was on a pursuit. He worked so hard. He really was dealt a tough one.’
