Chennai, May 26, 2024 – In a dominating performance, Shreyas Iyer’s Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) overwhelmed Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to win the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday. The clash, anticipated to be a high-voltage encounter, turned into a one-sided affair as KKR secured their third IPL title.
Australian pacer Mitchell Starc spearheaded KKR’s bowling attack, restricting SRH to a mere 113, the lowest-ever total in an IPL final. Starc’s impressive spell saw him take two crucial wickets while conceding just 14 runs. Supporting him, Andre Russell and Harshit Rana collectively took five wickets, helping dismiss SRH in just 18.3 overs.
In the chase, opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz provided a solid start with a brisk 39 off 32 balls. Venkatesh Iyer’s unbeaten 52 off 26 balls ensured KKR cruised to an eight-wicket victory, sealing the win in style.
With this victory, KKR not only lifted the prestigious IPL trophy for the third time but also secured a prize of INR 20 crore. SRH, the runners-up, will receive INR 12.5 crore. Former champions Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who finished third and fourth, will earn INR 7 crore and INR 6.5 crore, respectively.
Individual accolades were also handed out, with Virat Kohli of Royal Challengers Bengaluru winning the Orange Cap and INR 10 lakh for being the leading run-scorer of the season. Punjab Kings’ Harshal Patel took home the Purple Cap and INR 10 lakh as the highest wicket-taker. Additionally, the Emerging Player of the Tournament and the Most Valuable Player awards will fetch INR 20 lakh and INR 12 lakh, respectively.
