An admittedly nervous Naomi Biden, the daughter of Hunter Biden, testified Friday in her father’s gun trial.
During the fifth day of the federal Delaware trial, the 31-year-old granddaughter of President Joe Biden was questioned about the truck where Hunter’s gun was found, which she had borrowed the same month he had bought a firearm after allegedly lying on federal documents about his drug use.
As Naomi Biden left the courtroom Friday, she gave her father a brief hug and appeared to wipe away tears, before donning dark sunglasses and leaving the building.
She appeared on the fifth day of her father’s trial for felony charges related to a 2018 gun purchase. Prosecutors argue that he lied on federal documents about his drug use, which would have barred him from legally obtaining a firearm. If convicted, he could face up to 25 years in prison. The trial, expected to last one to two weeks, delves deeply into whether Biden’s drug use influenced his ability to lawfully purchase the firearm.
During her testimony, she was asked about her father’s addiction, which she said was at its height between 2015 and 2018.
“I knew that he was struggling with addiction,” she told the court.
“After my uncle died, things got bad,” she said in reference to Beau Biden’s passing from brain cancer in 2015.
After visiting her father in a Los Angeles rehab center in August 2018, she next saw him in October, during the week he allegedly possessed the firearm in question at this trial.
Around Oct. 18 2018, Naomi Biden had taken her father’s truck up to New York City from D.C., when moving in with her then-boyfriend, now husband, Peter.
Hunter Biden testified about how she stopped by to visit and collect the truck and he then seemed “hopeful”.
The prosecution asked her if there was any sign of drug paraphernalia in the truck, which she denied, adding it was in good condition.
Shortly after the visit, her father returned to rehab.
Earlier in the day, the court heard the final prosecution witnesses: an FBI chemist and a DEA agent.
Then it was the defense’s turn, calling gun shop employee Jason Turner, who processed the federal form Biden allegedly lied on.
Turner appeared frustrated at the defense’s questioning, answering with apparent sarcasm when Abbe Lowell asked what he was doing when Hunter Biden bought the gun.
“I put on my ritual robes and went and sat in a marble room,” he replied.
The store’s owner, Ronald Palimere, also testified for the defense before Naomi Biden took the stand.
Court was dismissed for the day Friday right after lunch. It is unclear if Hunter’s uncle, James Biden was not able to attend or will even testify at all. The defense has not rested yet and it’s still undecided whether Hunter Biden himself will take the stand next week.
Court resumes Monday.
