Ottawa riser Maeesha b has shared impressive new EP ‘if only u knew’.
The songwriter has music in her veins – performing from a young age, she actually came third place in Music Jeunesse in Quebec a revered competition. Coming of age in Ottawa, she’s proud of her French heritage, while also receiving vocal coaching and production from Shaun Royer and Roy Hamilton respectively.
Dubbed her “R&B love songs”, there’s nothing straight forward about Maeesha b’s songwriting. Reminiscent of H.E.R. in her virtuosity, the sheer musicality on display allows the riser to bend vintage tropes to her command.
‘CALL ME’ has a high-energy appeal, while ‘BACK IT UP’ taps into those ever-present Jersey Club tropes. ‘PROVE IT’ dips into afrobeats, but there’s also plenty of beautiful, down-the-line R&B moments to highlight the purity of her vocals.
An impressive first EP, ‘if only u knew’ permits Maeesha b space to explore her talents – and sketch out who she wants to become.
Tune in now.
