TRUSSVILLE, Ala. (WBRC) – Children’s of Alabama partnered with State Farm Insurance, Safe Kids Alabama and more to host a Teen Safe Driving event on Monday at Playstation Trussville.
More than 50 students with the Birmingham Water Works Ambassador program learned about the dangers they could face on the roads.
Students had the opportunity to drive a go-kart with drunk goggles on that showed them the risk of impaired driving and used simulators that showcased different distractors that can cause harm. They also learned what it is like to drive a semi and how to share the road with one. Students also talked to mechanics about routine check-ups and were walked through what happens in the ER following a car crash.
Marie Crew is the Director of the Health Education and Safety Center, at Children’s of Alabama. She said as parents, it’s important you talk to your new drivers about dangers they may face.
“You need to be a role model. They are watching what you are doing. If you’re texting and driving, guess what? They are texting and driving. Put the phones down and pay attention the roads. And then, really work with them on driving in different environments like at night, in the rain, on the highway, on back roads,” said Crew.
Crew also suggests coming up with a driving contract with your teen so they know what they can and can’t do behind the wheel. Examples can be found here.
