In a tragic incident on Monday, a collision between the Kanchanjunga Express and a goods train in West Bengal resulted in the loss of multiple lives, including the drivers of both trains. Jaya Varma Sinha, Chairperson of the Railway Board, confirmed that the collision was due to a human error, as the goods train’s loco pilot disregarded a signal.
“The accident happened today morning. Kanchanjunga Express was traveling from Agartala to Sealdah when it was hit in the rear by a goods train that ignored the signal,” Sinha told ANI. At least nine people have been confirmed dead, with reports suggesting the toll could rise to as high as 15.
The collision, which occurred near New Jalpaiguri, also resulted in significant injuries. “About fifty passengers have been injured and admitted to North Bengal Medical College,” Sinha added.
Sinha detailed the impact of the collision, noting that a guard’s coach and two parcel vans of the Kanchanjunga Express were destroyed. “The damage to these three coaches helped prevent the passenger coaches from being largely affected,” she explained. However, the general compartment of the train also sustained damage.
Rescue operations prioritized passenger safety and were promptly completed. “Our area officer and his team reached the accident site, which is 10 km from the New Jalpaiguri station,” Sinha said, commending the efforts of the NDRF, Army, state administration, and local residents.
A Railways source told PTI that an automatic signalling system between Ranipatra Railway Station and Chattar Hat Junction was defective since 5:50 am, potentially contributing to the tragic incident.
