Juneteenth, now a federal holiday, honors the perseverance and determination of African Americans throughout U.S. history. Early in his presidency, President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law, commemorating June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their emancipation. Juneteenth is the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established in 1983.
This holiday serves as a poignant reminder to all Americans of the significant strides made by African Americans and their ongoing empowerment. In observance of Juneteenth, the Juneteenth flag will be flown over the Commerce Department this week.
The Biden Administration and the Commerce Department reaffirm their commitment to equality, diversity, and fostering an economy that benefits all Americans.
