Windsor’s deep affinity for whisky-making and long relationship with the smooth, brown liquor are being celebrated with the opening of a new Museum Windsor exhibit.
Beyond the Barrel: Windsor’s Whisky History opens Saturday at the Chimczuk Museum.
The temporary display will showcase the history of whisky and its connection to the Windsor-Essex area, with themes that include farming, early production and the founding of local distilleries.

Both the prohibition era and the post-prohibition whisky market are explored.
Visitors can pore over artifacts and photographs and travel through the local history of whisky making.
“I’ve often said that in the City of Windsor, we all know or have someone in our families who either worked at or is connected to Hiram Walker & Sons Ltd., Canadian Club, and to our automotive manufacturers,” Mayor Drew Dilkens said in a news release.
“There is great value in the stories these artifacts have to tell, and I’m pleased to have been able to loan a portion of my own personal collection to this exhibition.
“Collected, combined and displayed, the items in this exhibit help to share an important chapter of Windsor’s story.”
Dilkens will cut the ribbon Saturday at 10:30 a.m., during a ceremony to open the exhibit, which thanks to the sponsorship of Tourism Windsor-Essex Pelee Island is free of charge from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Guided tours will be offered following the ribbon-cutting ceremony and again at 12:30 p.m.
The downtown Chimczuk Museum is located at 401 Riverside Dr. W.
