Kiefer Sutherland has given fans an update after the death of his father yesterday. Donald Sutherland, known for his roles in The Hunger Games and Kelly’s Heroes, died at the age of 88 on Thursday.
The Canadian actor shared with his followers on X: “My family and I have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of condolences and support over the last 24 hours. Thank you very much.”
He also included a photo of a smiling Donald alongside the tweet. The Hollywood actor was confirmed to have died after a long illness yesterday.
Many of Kiefer’s fans have flooded the comments section with condolences. One person said: “Your dear Father was an icon, a true legend! My deepest, sincere condolences.”
A second person commented: “Kiefer, we are the ones who have to give thanks for having enjoyed the wonderful performances of an actor as incredible as your father. Thank you, Donald, for everything you have given us!!”
A third fan also replied: “Your father was awesome,Kiefer. Sorry for your loss. Hope you and your family are doing ok.”
Donald shot to fame in the 1967 film, The Dirty Dozen. Despite his small role, it made a lasting impression and he later appeared in the original 1970 film version of M*A*S*H.
Some of his biggest hits included Kelly’s Heroes, Klute, JFK, Animal House and the remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
His most recent works included the iconic role of President Snow in The Hunger Games film franchise.
Kiefer initially announced his father’s death in a devastating social media post. He stated: “With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away.
“I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”
Director Billy Ray also said online: “A prince. A brilliant actor. Wildly underrated. I was beyond proud to be on the Academy Board of Governors when we voted him his much-deserved Governor’s Award. NOT an Ordinary Person at all… May the odds be ever in his favour…”
US President Joe Biden also paid tribute, saying: “Donald Sutherland was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and one-of-a-kind actor who inspired and entertained the world for decades.
“My thoughts are with his family and all those who loved him.”
