The $3-million reconstruction of Lanspeary Park pool is finished and swimmers will be welcomed back there and at Windsor’s other public pools next week.
“We’ve been working on the pool since 2022 and are happy to be opening it this summer,” said Jennifer Knights, the city’s executive director of recreation and culture.
The new pool replaces the previous swimming pool that opened in 1950 as the city’s first municipal outdoor swimming pool. It had surpassed its life expectancy, eventually succumbing to such issues as an aged vinyl liner and mechanical problems that forced its shutdown.

The upgraded pool has a host of new and improved features, including a beach entry, a shallow play zone, dedicated swim lanes, and diving equipment.
“It’s 25 metres long with four lanes for fitness swimmers and our leadership courses,” Knights told the Star.
“It has a beach entry, which is like a shallow walk into the beach-type space to accommodate programming for parents and tots as well as our learn-to-swim program.”
The city’s six outdoor public pools at parks in Lanspeary, Mic Mac, Atkinson, Central, Remington Booster, and Riverside Centennial all open for the season on Saturday, June 29.
“We have daily swims at all of our pools,” Knights said.
Atkinson Pool and Mic Mac Pool will offer recreational swimming from 1:30-4 p.m. Monday to Sunday.
Lanspeary Pool, Central Pool, Remington Booster Pool, and Riverside Centennial Pool will offer recreational swimming from 12-4 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. Monday to Sunday.
According to Knight, the city has 220 instructors and lifeguards, which is back to pre-pandemic levels.
“Once we gear up for summer, which is occurring this week, we bring them all on-site for general staff training as well as training that’s specific to the pool or pools they’re going to be working at in the summer.”

For the outdoor pools, the city will be using an online registration system at ActiveWindsor.ca to ensure no pool goes beyond its capacity, which will range between 10 and 25 swimmers based on the size of the pool.
In addition to the pools, Windsor boasts 12 splash pads spread across the city.
