The Hyannis Harbor Hawks (7-4-1) picked up a signature win after they beat the Wareham Gatemen (9-3) 12-5 at Clem Spillane Field on Friday. The loss ended the Gatemen’s league-best six-game win streak.
Four Harbor Hawks recorded two-hit games, led by Niagara’s Nick Groves, who had three RBIs. Kane Kepley (Liberty) had two hits, scored two runs and was walked three times. Michael Dattalo (Dallas Baptist) recorded two hits, scored three runs and two walks, while Wallace Clark (Duke) had two hits and scored two runs. Auburn’s Eric Snow tallied three RBIs, despite not recording a single hit. He reached base on a fielder’s choice, which scored a run, hit a sacrifice fly that drove in another, and was walked with the bases loaded. The Harbor Hawks utilized four pitchers in the win, as Blaine Wynk pitched four innings, where he gave up four hits and two earned runs to go with four strikeouts. Sacramento State’s Kade Brown picked up the win after he pitched 1.2 innings. Hyannis scored all 12 runs in the first four innings and never looked back.
Wareham had 11 hits in the game but stranded 11 on base and went 3-for-15 with runners in scoring position. Eli Putnam (Davidson) had two hits, two RBIs and scored a run to pace the Gatemen’s offense. Hyannis jumped all over Cole Leaman (Lehigh) in the first inning, as the pitcher gave up four earned runs on two hits before he exited the game.
Y-D Red Sox 8, Chatham Anglers 2
South Carolina’s Ethan Petry (three hits, three RBIs, two runs) hit a three-run home run that capped off a five-run third inning, and the East Division leading Red Sox (9-3) secured back-to-back wins. The Anglers (5-7), who had taken an early lead, slipped to consecutive defeats.
Cade McGee (Texas Tech) put an exclamation point on the victory with a three-run home run of his own in the seventh inning. Dylan Vigue (Michigan) gave up two hits, one earned run and struck out nine in 5.2 innings and recorded his first win of the season. Cameron Kim (UCLA) had two hits and scored a run. The Red Sox were efficient with runners in scoring position, and went 4-for-10 in such situations.
Will Gasparino (Texas) had a hit and recorded an RBI for Chatham, who combined for just four hits and five walks. Austin Peay’s John Bay (hit, walk) scored on a passed ball. Drake George (Lewis-Clark State College) surrendered seven hits, which included a home run, five earned runs, three walks and struck out three in 4.2 innings to fall to a 1-1 record.
Orleans Firebirds 5, Brewster Whitecaps 2
The Firebirds (3-9) capitalized on smart base running to stop a three-game losing streak in a win over the Whitecaps (5-7). James Madison’s Mike Mancini (one hit, two runs, one RBI, one walk) scored from second on a Khadim Diaw (Loyola Marymount) single, while Orleans also scored on a pair of wild pitches in the seventh and ninth innings. Matthew Dalquist (UC San Diego) and Miles Gosztola (Gonzaga), who picked up his second win, combined for six scoreless innings, four walks and seven strikeouts. Harvard’s Sean Matson secured his third save of the season.
Arkansas’ Ryder Helfrick hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning for Brewster. Jake Clemente (Florida) pitched four innings, gave up three hits, two earned runs, two walks and struck out six in the loss.
Cotuit Kettleers 7, Bourne Braves 3
The Kettleers (8-4) overhauled the Braves (3-8-1) to jump straight back into the win column. Bourne dropped to a third-straight defeat, as they let a three-run lead slip. Cotuit scored a trio of runs in the fourth innings to tie the game and then added three more in the sixth to build a 6-3 advantage. They added an insurance marker in the eighth. The Kettleers hit .306 as a team, as five players recorded two-hit games. Matt Klein (Louisville) led the line with a pair of RBIs, while Brandon Compton (Arizona State) had two hits, was walked twice, tallied an RBI and scored a run. Michael Ebner (Southern California) moved to a 2-0 record after pitching 3.1 scoreless and hitless innings. Starting pitcher Thatcher Hurd (LSU) surrendered all three runs and three hits that the Braves had in 3.2 innings.
Notre Dame’s Jack Penney had a hit, two RBIs and scored a run for the Braves. Zane Adams (Alabama) lasted four innings, gave up five hits, three earned runs and struck out four, while Zach Crotchfelt (Auburn) took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season after pitching 1.1 innings.
Harwich Mariners 4, Falmouth Commodores 1
Haiden Leffew (Wake Forest) struck out eight, gave up two hits and pitched 5.1 scoreless innings as the Mariners (7-5) rebounded from back-to-back defeats in a win over the Commodores (3-9). Colton Shaw (Yale) gave up no runs and just two hits in 1.2 innings of relief, while Justin Mitrovich (Elon) picked up his second save, despite surrendering Falmouth’s only run of the game. UNC Greensboro’s Jake Ogden had two hits, a walk and an RBI. Michael Anderson (Rhode Island) hit a home run in the sixth inning that made it 3-0 to the Mariners and ended a run of four scoreless innings.
Brown’s Jack Seppings had a strong outing despite dropping to an 0-2 record on the season. He gave up just two hits, two runs, three walks and struck out seven in five innings. Gavin Turley (Oregon State) drove in the Commodores’ only run but was thrown out at second as he tried for extra bases to end the game.
