LCD Soundsystem have just played a superb set at Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage.
The band are old acquaintances with the festival, having first played Worthy Farm almost exactly 20 years ago. Making their eagerly-awaited return to Glastonbury, LCD Soundsystem didn’t shrink from the challenge – shut up and play the hits, indeed.
Opening with ‘Oh Baby’ and ‘I Can Change’, frontman James Murphy then told the crowd: “Nice to see you all… you out number us. Again! But we’ve got speakers and stuff so we’ll try to match you!”
Moving into ‘Tonite’ and ‘Losing My Edge’ the atmosphere touched on rave euphoria. There was room for emotion, too, such as a touching rendition of ‘Someone Great’. Jakes Murphy told the crowd: “We have a short time but we’ve got a big heart!”
Drummer Al Doyle – borrowed from Hot Chip – is making a return to UK soil, and there can no better place to appreciate LCD Soundsystem than the band’s home-from-home.
Drawing on the full span of their catalogue, LCD Soundsystem matched early cuts to material from 2017’s acclaimed comeback ‘American Dream’ before closing with ‘All My Friends’.
The band followed an emotional, gripping performance from PJ Harvey – next up, a headline Pyramid Stage performance from Dua Lipa.
