The news is not good for Trevor Harris.
As the Saskatchewan Roughriders returned to the field on Sunday following their bye week, there was no sign of the 38-year-old veteran quarterback, who was injured in Saskatchewan’s Week 3 game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on June 23.
After the workout, head coach Corey Mace provided an update on the injured pivot, who missed the final 13 games last season with a tibial plateau fracture in his right knee.

“He’s dealing with a pretty moderate MCL (sprain),” said Mace. “The good news is it’s not a season-ender but we’re going to be smart with it as it is a long season. We’re still early into it so we’re going to put him on the (six-game injured list).
“If he ends up being able to come off of that then we’ll roll with that but trying to be smart about it like we did on game day.”
After being hurt late in the first half against Hamilton, Harris went to the locker room before emerging midway through the third quarter. He pleaded his case with Mace to get back into the game but was instead a spectator for the second half.
On Sunday, Harris came out to spectate a portion of the practice with a large brace on his left knee.
“Trevor is tough,” said Mace. “If we honestly left it to him, he’d be out here but we’re going to play it smart.
“You’ve got to protect players from themselves when the juices are flying on game day and knowing Trev, he just wants to be out there for his brothers.
“I thought it was the right decision then and I think it’s the right decision now.”
With Harris set to miss an extended period of time, Shea Patterson will assume starting quarterback duties and get his first career CFL start as Saskatchewan hosts the Toronto Argonauts on Thursday night at Mosaic Stadium (7 p.m., TSN).

“It’s just an opportunity for me to step in and lead,” Patterson said after practice on Sunday. “Just as far as myself, just go in as a leader and try to lead these guys up and down the field and really just be ready for the moment like I have been.
“Trevor has done a heck of a job as far as me watching him prepare and watching him see how he goes about his day.”
While rookie Jack Coan would move from third-stringer to backup, the Riders also signed American quarterback Eric Barriere, who recently attending training camp with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The 26-year-old previously worked out for the NFL’s Denver Broncos in 2022 following a college career at Eastern Washington, where he was named the Walter Payton Award winner as the top player in the NCAA’s FCS in 2021.
After being cut by Winnipeg, Barriere went home to Los Angeles and was patiently for another opportunity when Saskatchewan called.
“Just working out at home,” said the 6-foot, 207-pound Barriere, who also had stints with the USFL’s Michigan Panthers (2022) and New Jersey Generals (2023). “Just staying ready and that’s about it.
