The Amherstburg Fire Department has a new head honcho.
Michael Mio will take the reins from retiring fire chief and community emergency management co-ordinator Bruce Montone on Sept. 16.
Mio has served with the Windsor Fire and Rescue Service since 1994, advancing through the ranks to assistant chief of the fire and rescue division. He also serves as a lead evaluator and proctor for the Office of the Fire Marshall of Ontario.

Mio holds certifications in emergency management, incident management, Blue Card Command (incident training for fire incident command), and several National Fire Protection Association certifications. He serves as team lead for the Windsor Level 3 Provincial Hazardous Material Response Team and helped to develop the City of Windsor’s Public Access Defibrillation program, giving the public access to defibrillators in case of a medical emergency.
“We very much look forward to having Fire Chief Michael Mio join us in the fall at which time he will initiate the execution of a strategic transition plan that will form the beginnings of the future leadership and direction of the Amherstburg Fire Department,” the town said in a statement.
“He brings an enthusiastic, results-driven approach that is based on a high level of ethics, respect, communication and positive team culture, which encourages others to achieve a high standard of performance and service.”

Outgoing chief Montone has served as Amherstburg’s fire chief since 2017. Before then, he was chief of Windsor Fire and Rescue Services for almost seven years and served as deputy fire chief in the nation’s capital for nine years.
