Snowbirds’ show was just perfect
Our blue sky was alive with the sound and sights of our beloved Snowbirds in Ottawa on Canada Day. What a thrilling and heart-stopping national treat.
Thank you to our Canadian Forces team, and all military and civilian personnel involved in organizing this special event. It was perfect.

Flypast route was less than ideal
Article content
The National Aviation and Space Museum put on a great event for Canada Day. One of the highlights was to be the flypast by a collection of historic and current RCAF aircraft. Regrettably, this flypast was marred by the route the planes took, which was well to the east and south of the museum.
Surely, it would have been a simple matter to arrange the flypast to be rerouted above the runway at Rockcliffe airstrip. This way, the planes would have been closer and would have been better enjoyed by those attending.

Make red and white our official colours
Re: Red, white and draped all over: The story of Canada’s colours, June 28.
Of course it’s complicated; what isn’t? Thank you to the author for this history and interpretations of “red and white,” not only in Canada but throughout the world.
After flying the most noticeable, beautiful and honoured flag in the universe since 1965, a mere 59 years, I believe it is time to make red and white Canada’s official colours. Nothing complicated about that if we can only have our government make this happen. Let’s do it.

Yes, speed cameras are a money grab
A lot has been said about the injustice of cameras set up to catch people speeding.
I am one of those unfortunate ones: I was on a four-lane road with no school and a 50-km speed limit that I didn’t notice. I got a ticket for $95. I have not had a speeding ticket for more than 40 years.
My question is: if the cameras are not a money grab, why not set up warning signs such as the ones on Albion Road that show the speed you are travelling at? This will slow you down, for sure. Cameras are indeed nothing else than money-grabbing.

How housing costs have changed
We are preparing for a move to an apartment, and while decluttering the house, my wife came upon my pay receipts from the 1970s. In 1973, we bought our first home in Montreal for $25,000.
Checking my pay stubs, I was making $18,000 a year. With my wife’s salary we probably had a combined income around $30,000. So our annual gross income was higher than the cost of the house. What a change from today.
Mortgage rates in 1973 were higher than now. But with a relatively small mortgage, it wouldn’t have been a concern. Quite a shocking change from today’s housing prices relative to salaries.
