A look at how the Regina Red Sox fared in the last week of the WCBL season, plus results from two major Football Canada events

Regina Red Sox
The Regina Red Sox continue to occupy top spot in the East Division into the second half of the Western Canadian Baseball League season.
Last week, the Red Sox split a double header against the Saskatoon Berries before beating the Weyburn Beavers on Friday. Regina then split a back-to-back against the Medicine Hat Mavericks on the weekend.
Regina’s Jackson Syring continues to lead the league with a .429 batting average and 42 runs in 32 games.

The Red Sox (23-11) will now get set to visit Weyburn on Tuesday before hosting the second-place Moose Jaw Miller Express on Wednesday. Regina will then be home to the Swift Current 57s on Thursday before visiting Weyburn on Friday and Swift Current on Sunday.
Diving nationals
At the 2024 Diving Canada Elite Junior Nationals in Saskatoon, Regina’s Lila Stewart claimed first place in the 3-metre springboard event, while also setting a Canadian record in her group with a score of 540.15, which was 64 points clear of second place.
Stewart also finished third in the 1-m event while fellow Regina diver Brooke O’Day finished seventh in the platform finals and eighth in the 3-m finals.
Regina’s Freddie Moffat had a fourth-place finish in the men’s 1-m and a ninth-place finish in the 3-m event.
Junior golf
Yorkton’s Ella Kozak recorded a 13-shot victory to claim her second Saskatchewan Junior Women’s Golf Championship on the weekend at the Deer Park Municipal Golf Course in Yorkton.
Kozak, 18, finished with rounds of 70, 69 and 72 for 211, the lowest score posted over 54 holes in tournament history according to Golf Saskatchewan.

Calgary’s Sela Ogada finished in second while Kyle’s Chloe Wills finished third. Ogada was also the top U15 finisher while Wills was the U17 winner for the second straight year.
Kozak, along with Saskatoon’s Grace Odnokon and Swift Current’s Niya Friesen, have earned spots at the upcoming Canadian Junior Girls Championship.
In the junior men’s category, Saskatoon’s Ryan Mosher claimed top spot ahead of fellow Saskatoon product Max Regier. Saskatoon’s Aricin Franklin finished third.
Regina’s Jun Lee claimed the U13 championship.
Mosher, Regier, Franklin and Regina’s Aiden Walker, who finished fifth, will represent Saskatchewan at the Canadian Junior Boys Championship.
U16 Western Challenge
Team Saskatchewan claimed a fourth straight title at Football Canada’s U16 Western Challenge at Leibel Field in Regina.
The Saskatchewan squad beat Alberta 24-0 to claim the gold medal, just days after crushing Manitoba 38-0 in the semifinal.
Marcus Adams, who had four touchdowns in the semifinal, scored two more along the ground in the final.
Saskatchewan quarterback Gavin Newell, who threw a touchdown pass to Daniel Potgieter in the gold medal game, was named offensive MVP while Nickson Goldstone was named defensive MVP.

Football Canada Cup
The U18 Football Canada Cup is underway in Regina this week.
Action got underway on Sunday with Saskatchewan topping Manitoba 36-7. Meanwhile, Quebec beat B.C. 50-19, Ontario blanked Nova Scotia 58-0 while Alberta shut out New Brunswick 22-0.
Saskatchewan will now face Ontario on Wednesday at 7 p.m. while Quebec will take on Alberta at 4 p.m. in the semifinals at Leibel Field.
The winners will then face off on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the gold medal final at Mosaic Stadium while the losers will play at 4 p.m. for bronze.
Last year, Saskatchewan and Quebec were named co-champions after the final was cancelled due to smoky conditions. Saskatchewan also won the three previous tournaments.
Rugby scores
In local rugby action on Friday, the Regina Rogues topped the Regina Highlanders 64-10 while the Campion Grads beat the Regina Condors 43-24.
Water polo
Team Saskatchewan’s 19U women’s water polo team won the 2024 Women’s National Provincial Championship on the weekend.
Team Saskatchewan’s men’s team finished in third.
In the 15U category, Saskatchewan’s girls team also finished in third.

Amateur and mid-amateur golf
The Royal Regina Golf Club is hosting the 2024 Saskatchewan Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championships this week.
The tournament runs from Tuesday to Friday with the mid-amateur events being a three-day, 54-hole event while the amateurs play a four-day, 72-hole event with a cut after day three.
It will be the 113th edition men’s amateur event while the women will be playing their 105th. This year, the Royal Regina Golf Club is celebrating its 125th anniversary.
The Royal Regina last hosted the men’s mid-amateur championship in 2008 while the men’s amateur was last played at the course in 2000. The women’s amateur event was contested at the Royal Regina in 1966. Now the championships are all played during the same week.
