The Windsor Police Service’s Amherstburg detachment is under new command.
Police announced Tuesday that Staff Sgt. Bryan Hayes recently took over operational and administrative command of the detachment.
“I am very excited to take on this new assignment in Amherstburg,” said Hayes. “This community is very important to me, and I will ensure that the citizens continue to receive the high standard of policing that they expect and deserve.”

Hayes is a 20-year veteran of the Windsor Police Service, and has held various positions in the organizations’ patrol, investigations, and administration departments.
He was promoted to staff sergeant December 2023 and assigned to Patrol Response, where he oversaw a platoon of more than 50 frontline officers.
Hayes replaces Staff Sgt. Brian Caffarena, who had overseen the detachment since October 2022. The organization said Caffaren is moving into a leadership role with the Windsor Police’s City Centre Patrol.
“Given his extensive experience and expertise, Staff Sgt. Hayes is a natural fit to take this particular leadership role at our Amherstburg Detachment,” said Windsor Police Chief Jason Bellaire. “I also want to recognize and thank our outgoing Amherstburg Detachment commander, Staff Sgt. Caffarena, for his tremendous leadership and dedication to our community.”
The Windsor Police Service officially began a 20-year contract for policing in Amherstburg and its roughly 26,000 residents on Jan. 1, 2019.
The handover marked the end of the modern day Amherstburg Police Service, which was established in August 1957 with three members.
By the time Windsor police took it over in 2019, the Amherstburg Police Service had grown to about 30 members.
