New Delhi – President Droupadi Mumru has appointed justices H N Kotiswar Singh and R Mahadevan as judges of the Supreme Court of India. Justice Singh, currently serving as the Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, and Justice Mahadevan, a judge in the Madras High Court, have been elevated to the highest judicial body in the country.
Justice Singh, who hails from Manipur, was appointed as the Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in February 2023. Born on March 1, 1963, in Imphal, he is the son of Justice N Ibotombi Singh, a former judge of the Gauhati High Court. Justice Singh began his legal career practicing before the Supreme Court of India and later served as an additional judge of the Gauhati High Court before his elevation to permanent judge in 2012. He has been recognized for his legal acumen and was appointed to the Manipur High Court in 2013, bringing representation from Manipur to the Supreme Court for the first time.
Justice R Mahadevan, currently the acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, comes from a background specializing in civil, criminal, and writ cases, particularly in indirect taxes and customs matters. He started his legal career after graduating from Madras Law College and was appointed as a judge of the Madras High Court in 2013.
Both appointments follow recommendations by the Collegium led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, along with Justices Sanjiv Khanna, B R Gavai, Surya Kant, and Hrishikesh Roy, and were unanimously approved on July 12. These appointments further strengthen the judiciary with their diverse expertise and backgrounds.
