Heavy rain has caused severe waterlogging in Pune and Kolhapur, disrupting normal life. Schools have been closed, and several residential apartments in Pune’s Pimpri-Chinchwad area have been flooded. Tragically, three people have been electrocuted due to the waterlogging.
Two teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have joined rescue operations in the Ekta Nagar locality, where the fire department has been using boats to rescue stranded individuals. In some areas, water levels have reached waist height. The Baba Bhide bridge over the Mutha river is now submerged after the river’s water level rose following the downpour.
Pune collector Suhas Diwase has ordered the closure of all tourist spots in the district for 48 hours and prohibited traffic movement on bridges at risk of submersion. The district administration has also advised residents to stay indoors and only venture out if necessary.
The Khadakwasla dam has reached its full capacity due to the heavy rainfall, prompting an alert for residents living along the Mutha riverbank.
In the Deccan Gymkhana area, three street food vendors—Abhishek Ghanekar, Akash Mane, and Shiva Parihar—were electrocuted early today while trying to recover a handcart from a flooded street.
Mumbai is also experiencing heavy rainfall, with some areas in Dombivali facing flooding. The Andheri Subway has been closed due to waterlogging. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation reported that Vihar Lake, one of the seven lakes supplying water to the city, began overflowing early today. The lake’s capacity is 2769 crore litres. The weather office has issued a red alert for Maharashtra on Thursday, predicting extremely heavy rain.
