The driver of a semi truck carrying about 8.75 million unstamped cigarettes is facing charges, according to the Saskatchewan RCMP.
A Friday news release said the haul was discovered when a semi was inspected on the TransCanada highway near Swift Current on July 17.
A Saskatchewan Highway Patrol (SHP) officer “determined the semi’s bill of lading was false,” and a subsequent investigation led to the discovery of around 30 pallets of unstamped tobacco in the truck’s trailer, the release said.

The driver was arrested and RCMP became involved.
The truck was travelling from Ontario to B.C. The provincial highway patrol characterizes the incident as the largest tobacco seizure in its history, the release noted.
The driver, a 25-year-old man from Calgary, faces three charges related to the unstamped tobacco under the Criminal Code, the Excise Act and the Saskatchewan Tobacco Tax Act.
He is scheduled to appear in Swift Current Provincial Court on Aug. 14.
