Kolkata: Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer arrested for the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has confessed to the crime and pleaded with the police to hang him, according to sources. During interrogation, Roy reportedly told the police, “Mujhe fansi de dijiye” (Hang me, please).
Roy, who was taken into custody on Saturday, also admitted to previous violent behavior toward his mother, sister, and wife. His mother-in-law had earlier lodged a complaint against him for domestic abuse at the Kalighat Police Station.
The body of the post-graduate trainee doctor was discovered in the seminar room of the West Bengal government-run hospital on Friday morning. Roy, who was stationed at the hospital’s police outpost and had access to various departments, was identified as the suspect through CCTV footage.
The police have seized Roy’s mobile phone, which allegedly contains disturbing and violent pornographic content. The data retrieval process from the device is expected to take place soon, with investigators also gathering statements from five police personnel posted at the hospital.
The case has drawn significant attention, with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee warning the Kolkata police that the investigation would be handed over to the CBI if they fail to solve the case by Sunday, August 18.
