Kolkata: The Kolkata police on Monday reported the arrest of Sanjoy Roy, a 33-year-old civic volunteer, for the brutal rape and murder of a doctor at a state-run hospital. The accused, who has a history of disturbing behavior and violent tendencies, was found with explicit and “unnatural” pornographic content on his mobile phone, according to a police officer.
Roy, who joined the police force in 2019, had been married four times and was known as a womanizer. Neighbors and police sources revealed that his relationships were marred by physical abuse, with his fourth wife having filed a domestic violence complaint before their eventual separation.
The incident occurred at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the victim, a post-graduate trainee doctor, was found murdered in a seminar hall. She had been on night duty and went to the hall to rest when the attack took place. The autopsy confirmed that she was raped, with evidence of severe injuries including blood oozing from her private parts, mouth, and eyes, and a broken neck.
Police apprehended Roy after discovering his Bluetooth headset at the crime scene. Despite his mother’s claims that he was innocent and being framed, police are investigating additional aspects of the case, including Roy’s alleged influence due to his connections with senior officers. He was charged under sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of the BNS. Roy reportedly returned to his barracks after the crime, slept, and later attempted to clean his clothes, though bloodstains were still found on his shoes.
