After a sunny week perfect for leisurely strolls and outdoor activities, Environment Canada is forecasting a wet weekend for the Windsor area with rainfall and thunderstorms that could affect several local events.
The national weather agency has issued a “message from your forecaster” warning of potentially heavy rain between 8 p.m. Friday and 8 p.m. Sunday.

“Locally heavy rain is possible as a moisture-laden system approaches,” Environment Canada said. “This pattern can bring significant rainfall amounts, high rainfall rates and thunderstorms.”
The forecasted high temperature for Thursday was 28 C. Environment Canada said there was a 40 per cent chance of rain overnight Thursday with the temperature likely dropping to around 22 C.
Environment Canada was forecasting a risk of thunderstorms starting Friday morning and going into the afternoon. The agency said there was a 60 per cent of showers Friday night with a low of 20 C.
The rain is expected to continue Saturday, with Environment Canada calling for a high temperature of 25 C with cloudy periods and a 60 per cent chance of rain. Sunday was also expected to bring a high of 25 C with mixes of sun, clouds, and a 60 per cent chance of rain showers.
There are several events planned for the weekend that could be dampened by heavy rains.
Among them is Dropped on Drouillard, an annual outdoor “urban street and culture festival” running from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday in the 900 and 1000 blocks of Drouillard Road. Organizers said the event will go ahead rain or shine.
The 10th annual Beer Mile World Classic, which organizers call the “pinnacle of running and drinking,” is scheduled for Saturday at University of Windsor’s Alumni Field.
The Essex Centre Soap Box Derby is also scheduled to run Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Talbot Street in Essex.
