- The Epic Games Store is out now on mobile
- They’ve sweetened the deal with some in-game rewards for Fortnite
- And there’s a lot more besides to take into account
Well, it’s finally here, the Epic Games Store is out now on iOS and Android. We’d known for a while that this was on the way, but it still seems to be a rather sudden release. Whatever the case, if you’re on iOS in the European Union you now have unequivocal access to Fortnite once more, bully for you.
But seriously, this move has been a long time coming on Epic’s part. It’s probably the most serious threat yet to Apple and Google’s dominance in terms of mobile storefronts, and whatever concessions and stumbling blocks Epic has faced along the way, it’s a major win for them.
We won’t get into the nitty gritty, but by now you should know that Epic laid down the gauntlets years ago over the 30% transaction fee leveraged by iOS on all purchases made using their app store. Now, Tim Sweeney’s ultimatum has succeeded beyond his wildest dreams as he can now have his own, with blackjack and, well, you get the picture.
Oh, and in case you’re scoffing, for all you Fortnite fans out there Sweeney has sweetened the deal with some exclusive in-game rewards.
Can it succeed?
But now, with Apple firmly on the back foot, the ball is very much in Epic Games’ court. Will they manage to show just how backwards their competitors have been? Will they be able to succeed on mobile where their PC efforts have stalled? Well, I say it a lot, but we really will have to wait and see.
