CENTER POINT, Ala. (WBRC) – A deadly Center Point fire that impacted 14 apartment units joins a growing list of apartment fires in central Alabama, and resources are available to help get victims back on their feet.
From providing emergency shelter to meeting people’s medical needs, the Red Cross of Alabama says it is available to help.
After a fire, they are typically on the scene within two hours.
The Red Cross can comfort victims and offer financial assistance. Even people with insurance know the paperwork can become overwhelming during an emergency.
They also address basic needs, like food and shelter. Sometime churches open their doors, other times the Red Cross can open a shelter or place people in hotel rooms.
A little-known fact is the Red Cross can even help people recover medical devices.
“When you have like a CPAP machine, or a wheelchair, some type of medical device or equipment, it’s not easy to get that replaced but we have disaster health nurses who volunteer and they’re able to expedite those things,” said Annette Rowland with the Red Cross of Alabama. “We can pay for that replacement.”
She said even items like eyeglasses and contact lenses can apply.
“Those are essentials, and you need to be able to see and that’s not something you typically grab when you’re trying to save your life and run outside,” Rowland added.
Victims in need of assistance can call 1-800-Red Cross to get access to these resources.
It is a 24/7 hotline for help, Rowland said.
