As the Saskatchewan Roughriders prepare to meet the Montreal Alouettes at Mosaic Stadium, their toughest opponent in tonight’s game might be the wildfire smoke blanketing Regina.
The city was under an air quality advisory on Friday, as the federal Ministry of Environment and National Resources said outdoor conditions could become a health hazard.
“Wildfire smoke is causing or expected to cause very poor air quality and reduced visibility,” the advisory said. “Air quality and visibility due to wildfire smoke can fluctuate over short distances and can vary considerably from hour to hour. During heavy smoke conditions, everyone is at risk regardless of their age or health. The fine particles in wildfire smoke pose the main health risk.”

At noon on Friday, air quality in Regina was reported as a five — or “moderate risk” — on a scale from one to 10+, with one being the best air quality and 10+ being “very high risk.”
The forecast also said conditions could worsen to 10+ levels by later in the day.
According to CFL weather protocol, the league’s meteorologist will be monitoring the situation before and during the game.
Each CFL stadium is also equipped with air quality sensors that can provide real-time readings. If the Air Quality Health Index at Mosaic Stadium reaches eight or above during warmups or while the game is underway, the game will automatically be stopped and teams will be sent back to their dressing rooms.
If the air quality improves, teams can then return to the field and finish the game. If not, it will either be cancelled (if the stoppage happens early in the game) or, if an extended stoppage happens after the 7:30 mark of the third quarter, points will be awarded based on which team was in the lead at the time.
