A 36-year-old Sarnia man has been charged with attempted murder after police say an officer was stabbed multiple times — but is expected to recover.
According to authorities, officers were responding to a call about a man in distress at a Front Street apartment building in Sarnia around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.
“Police responded to that location and out of concern for the individual involved, officers made entry into an apartment unit in an attempt to locate the person involved,” said the Sarnia Police Service in a statement.
They allege while searching the apartment a man emerged from a concealed location armed with an “edged weapon” and attack responding officers.
One officer — a 13-year veteran with Sarnia police — ended up with “serious” stab wounds to the head, neck and arms.
Police chief Derek Davis says he’s grateful the officer is expected to recover and that it impacts every member of the force.
“This unprovoked attack demonstrates the real dangers faced by officers,” he said. “There is no such thing as a ‘routine’ call.”
The Sarnia Police Association says it holds zero tolerance for violent behaviour toward its members.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with our fellow colleague and his family; as we wish the officer a speedy and full recovery.”
