The Association also stated that, in total, the insurers it surveyed dealt with a total of 574,000 travel insurance claims last year – of which 29,000 were for trips to Spain, with payouts for that country totalling £41.7 million.
The ABI credited the number of claims for Spanish trips to the country’s enduring popularity with UK travellers as an overseas holiday destination.
Medical claims reached £291 million in 2023, with an average per-claim payout of £1,724.
However, the ABI noted that some individual cases cost much more than the average. It cited one payout by one of its members for injuries sustained in a forest fire that totalled £25,000 to cover medical costs and repatriation.
ABI data also highlighted that the average value of payouts rises with the age of the claimant. Those aged 36–40 received an average of £518, while those aged 71–75 received around £1,830.
This is reflected in the average single-trip premium of each age group: £38 and £190 respectively.
