Regina Thunder
The Regina Thunder’s defence posted a second straight shutout, backstopping a 30-0 victory against the visiting Winnipeg Rifles on Sunday while winning its third straight game of the Prairie Football Conference season.
“As a defence we pride ourselves on holding them to as few points as possible,” said veteran Thunder linebacker Kenten Effa, who had a tackle for a loss and a pass knockdown. “It’s a team effort. It starts up front with the D-line, getting in their fits, allowing the linebackers and DBs to come up and make plays.”

After Winnipeg conceded a safety midway through the first quarter, running back Sadik Sadik and kicker Shawn Green accounted for all of Regina’s scoring. Sadik had rushing touchdowns of one, 13 and 10 yards. Green converted each touchdown, missed a 38-yard field goal for a single and added successful three-pointers of 40 and 17 yards.
Regina opened its season with a 61-14 victory over Winnipeg and was coming off a 36-0 shutout against the Edmonton Wildcats. All six PFC teams have a bye this upcoming week before the Saskatoon Hilltops, the reigning Canadian junior champions who also sport a 3-0 record, visit the Thunder on Sept. 7. Game time is 7 p.m. at Mosaic Stadium.
Regina Rams
The University of Regina Rams are set to begin the Canada West football season this week.
On Friday, the Rams will begin conference play on the road against the Calgary Dinos. Regina’s home opener will be on Sept. 6 against the Saskatchewan Huskies.
Last week, the Rams fell 29-25 in an exhibition game against the Manitoba Bisons at Mosaic Stadium. The back-and-forth game saw several quarterbacks play while 16 different Rams made receptions in the game.

Flag football
At the Football Canada Club Flag National Championships, Saskatchewan female U16 and U18 teams both came away with silver at their respective tournaments.
Saskatchewan’s U18 female team narrowly lost to the Ottawa Hawks Black 19-13 in the final on Sunday in Brampton, Ont. while the 16U team fell 21-7 to the Niagara Nitros. Team Saskatchewan’s U18 boys lost in the quarterfinals.
Regina Trappers
The Regina Trappers claimed silver at the Baseball Canada Men’s National Championship on Sunday.
In a rematch of last year’s gold medal game, the Trappers lost 2-0 to Quebec, who won its second straight title. Pitcher Kody Rock was named tournament MVP after recording three wins and a save, while catcher Chris Untereiner was named top defensive player.
In 2025, Regina will host the national championship.
Baseball Canada
At the Ray Carter Cup in Laval, Que., Team Saskatchewan’s 15U Selects lost in the bronze medal game 6-2 to Quebec to finish in fourth.
Regina’s Tucker Jesson was named the tournament’s top defensive player.
Meanwhile, Saskatchewan’s 16U girls team also lost in the bronze medal game at their national championship in Saskatoon, as they fell 12-2 to Ontario.

Miller memorial
A memorial for former Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach Ken Miller is planned for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18, at Regina’s Christ the King Parish, 3239 Garnet St. All are welcome.
Miller was Saskatchewan’s offensive coordinator on the Roughriders’ 2007 Grey Cup-winning team before being promoted to head coach. He led the Roughriders to Grey Cup appearances in 2009 and 2010. He became the team’s vice-president of football operations and assumed the head coaching job again in 2011 before retiring with a record of 36-27-1, the fifth-most wins in team history. Miller died Aug. 21 in Asheville, N.C, at 82.
Senior rugby
The provincial senior women’s rugby championship was held in Regina over the weekend with the Saskatoon Kirin defeating the Regina Rage 39-17 in the final.
Meanwhile, the Regina senior men’s city championship was also held with the Regina Rogues beating the Regina Highlanders 47-5.
Founders Cup lacrosse
At the Founders Cup Jr. B box lacrosse national championship, the Queen City Kings finished in eighth place.
After pool play, the Kings lost 8-7 to the Mountain View Mavericks in the consolation semifinal. The Elora Mohawks won the title after beating the Hamilton Bengals 10-1.
