- Spongebob: Bubble Pop Fun is the newest game to emerge from Nickelodeon and Netflix
- It’s pretty much your standard match-three puzzler
- But it’s very suitable for kids and shows just how lucrative that familiar yellow sponge is
Netflix is once more nabbing an exclusive from Stephen Hillenberg’s iconic animated series, as Spongebob: Bubble Pop Fun comes to their service. This match-three puzzle game is coming exclusively to iOS and Android via the Netflix Games service, and joins the existing Spongebob: Get Cooking in their catalogue.
Gameplay-wise this really isn’t a title that’s pushing out the boat. It’s a match-three puzzle game where you pop bubbles, and is as bog-standard as it comes. But if you, or more likely your kids, are fans of Spongebob and want something not laden with microtransactions and already folded into your Netflix subscription then this will be a worthy addition.
In fact, what’s most notable about this new addition is that it seems Nickelodeon and Netflix have quite a lucrative agreement going on. Ever since Stephen Hillenberg created Spongebob decades ago, it’s been a cornerstone of the TV channel’s programming and a lucrative money-spinner. And this new wave of mobile games is intended to tie into upcoming programming on the streaming service, like the Sandy Cheeks Movie.
Pop, pop, pop
But at the same time, for those of you hoping there might be something a bit more diverting coming out of this agreement, Spongebob: Bubble Pop F.U.N. is unashamedly a kid’s game. That’s not to say that I was expecting anything more, but I do wonder whether or not Nickelodeon might try to push the boat out since they don’t have to worry about aspects like monetisation while they’re on Netflix.
Still, Netflix has plenty of other great games to boot, so they’d have stiff competition. Want to see what we mean? Then why not check out our list of the top ten games on Netflix?
