Re: Cancel culture and the need for Senate reform, editorial, Aug. 26
Kudos for your excellent editorial. Canada urgently needs a Triple E Senate, i.e. one that provides “equal” representation to all provinces and is composed of “elected,” not simply appointed, senators, therefore making it more “effective.”
Because of scandals involving appointed senators, Stephen Harper simply refused to fill a large number of Senate seats before leaving politics. That colossal error allowed Justin Trudeau to fill not only those vacant positions, but also a large number of others that opened up. Trudeau erroneously called them “independent senators,” claiming this was aimed at reforming the upper chamber.
That term “independent” is entirely meaningless. A recent study clearly showed the vast majority of Trudeau-appointed senators are, in fact, staunch supporters of his government. The Senate has a record of acting simply as a rubber stamp for passing Trudeau’s legislation, including controversially legalizing cannabis.

This Trudeau stacking of the Senate will prove extremely problematic for Pierre Poilievre if he ever forms government and needs to get legislation through the Senate. Trudeau’s action has ensured the Senate will remain solidly in the Liberal camp for decades.

LEAVE POLITICS TO OTHERS
Re: Pride divides hospital workers; Health-care employees sign pro-Palestinian petition, Aug. 24
Butt out.
Stick to your paid professional duties and leave politics to the specimens you have chosen to elect.
Do your protesting on your own time.
And, while you are at it, pull up those news videos of Palestinian civilians cheering and celebrating on Oct. 7 as Hamas paraded Israeli hostages into Gaza City.
That’s what this is all about.

JUST CALL JAKE
It sure was nice of the U.S. to send National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan to the Liberal cabinet retreat in Halifax to make sure Canada does the right things on Chinese EVs. This subtle reminder from the Americans ensured that Canada will now tariff Chinese electric vehicles 100 per cent going forward.
Thanks for the wakeup call, Jake. We occasionally need a reality check.
