- Bitmo Labs have unveiled their new peripheral, the GameBaby
- It’s a reversible controller case, which allows you to use the bottom half as a game controller
- However innovative it may be, we’re not sure how widespread compatibility will be
Peripheral designers Bitmo Labs has unveiled their new device, the Bitmo GameBaby. The GameBaby is compatible with the iPhone 15 Pro Max and 16 Pro Max and is a two-part protective case where the bottom half forms a game controller. It’s set to go on pre-sale today, with an early-bird price of $19.99 and retail of $39.99.
Objectively awful name besides, the GameBaby does boast some nifty features. As you might’ve guessed from the product pictures below, the bottom half of the casing is reversible. It allows you to make use of the controller, but also to switch it back round when you need to view the whole screen.
Obviously, Bitmo is aiming to emulate the famous Game Boy and its design. And while I can already see the appeal, I also wonder about the downsides. For one, it assumes that you’d be playing games compatible with this unusual layout and that regular use of your phone wouldn’t be bashing around the controller on the back.
A game changer? Maybe notWhile the GameBaby does seem pretty neat, I admit for the reasons I lay out above I can’t really find it that useful. The need to have games that support the unusual layout, the potential for sensitive parts to be knocked around, and the upper-level price certainly make me a bit sceptical that the GameBaby will be a big success. But I’m not about to say that it categorically won’t find an audience.
