With less than a week to go at the Paralympic Summer Games in Paris, Saskatchewan athletes are representing Canada on the court, track, pool and beyond.
It was a bronze-medal performance for Midale Para cyclist Keely Shaw who finished third in the women’s C4 3,000-metre Individual Pursuit, repeating her Tokyo 2020 placement.
The men’s wheelchair basketball team, featuring Regina’s Nik Goncin and Garrett Ostepchuk, are off to quarterfinals after defeating Germany 68-52 on Monday morning.

Also off to playoffs is Melfort’s Julie Kozun and the women’s sitting volleyball team, who defeated Rwanda 3-0 (25-14, 25-17 and 25-13) on Monday in their final round robin game.
Jacob Wassermann, who hails from Humboldt, wrapped up his first Paralympic experience on Sunday after racing in his third Para rowing men’s PR1 Single Sculls event in three days.
Para javelin’s Ashlyn Renneberg, from Saskatoon, finished seventh in the women’s F13 event in her Paralympic debut.
Saskatoon Para swimmers Shelby Newkirk and Hannah Ouellette, as well as teammate Nikita Ens from Meadow Lake, have all competed in Paris, with more events still to come for each of them.
On Tuesday, Asquith’s Ryan Rousell will compete in his first Paris event, the men’s wheelchair fencing sabre Category A preliminary round.
Huskies kick off soccer season
A win and a loss marked the opening Canada West weekend for the University of Saskatchewan men’s soccer team.
On Sunday, the team hosted the MacEwan Griffins, shutting them out 3-0 with Ethan Cabral, Robert Woodroffe-Brown and Robert MacKay scoring for the Dogs.

Earlier, on Friday, Saskatchewan was on the opposite side of the shutout, falling 4-0 to the visiting Alberta Golden Bears.
The Huskies women’s team took part in a pair of exhibition games on the weekend, losing back-to-back games 2-1 and 3-1 to the Regina Cougars.
Saskatoon hosts Canada Cup
The river was busy last week with Saskatoon hosting the Wakeboard and Waterski Canada Cup from Aug. 28-30.
In the pro men’s division, Great Britain’s Joel Poland claimed first place after winning jump-off against Freddy Kreuger of the United States with a distance of 66.9-m.
On the pro women’s side, Hanna Straltsova of the U.S. won with a 54.3-m jump and Canada’s Enzo Kristian won the men’s U17 event with a 48.4-m jump.
Softball Championships in Saskatoon
The Softball Canada Men’s and Men’s Master Championships were in Saskatoon over the weekend.
In the masters men’s division, the Coburg Force repeated as champions, defeating the Melfort 222’s 5-3, while the Hanley Merchants didn’t make playoffs.
On the awards front, Melfort’s Trevor Ethier was the tournament’s MVP and teammate Ryan Olde was the top hitter, while Jordie Gagnon, also from the Melfort team, was an outfielder all-star and Hanely’s Greg Nichol was an infielder all-star.

Over in the men’s division, the Galway Hitmen won 9-8 of the Toronto Batmen.
Three Saskatchewan teams competed in that division with the Saskatoon Angels losing in the quarterfinals after defeating the Saskatoon Jacks in the first round of playoffs and the Bruno Merchants didn’t advance to playoffs.
Jacks’ players Max Major and Mathew Kutnikoff were catcher and infielder all-stars, respectively, while Devon McCullough of the Angels was the event’s top pitcher.
