The ALGS (Apex Legends Global Series) Split 2 Playoffs 2024 have finally come to an end as SSG emerges as the victor. All 20 teams who made it to finals day battled it out in a whopping 10 matches before finally ending the entire tournament with a win.
40 teams arrived at the ALGS Split 2 Playoffs to compete across three days for a place in the Finals. Each one of those days began early and finished late, pushing every player to their limits. Finals day is by far the biggest challenge of all, though. Teams begin with no points and must play to earn points quickly so they can work towards a win and come out on top. Doing that requires immense concentration and stamina, and that’s exactly what SSG has demonstrated.
Winner, winner
Finals day for any ALGS tournament works a little differently to all the other days. Teams must play matches, getting kills and wins, until they’ve earned 50 points. Then, in the games after they’ve hit that point total, they can win the entire tournament if they just win a single match.
There’s a lot of nuance to the day, though. Teams don’t want to hit 50 points too soon, or every other team targets them so they don’t end the tournament by winning. This persists until enough teams have hit 50 points that it becomes a bloodbath, and the only way for it to end is for one team to beat every other with the skill and prowess that’s got them this far.
After two consecutive wins for GaiminGladiators, we all thought the tournament would end earlier than it ever has before on Match 4. Thankfully, the Split 2 Playoffs didn’t quite end there, despite a very close call between Alliance and GamingGladiators right at the end of Match 5.
We all thought it could end again in Match 6, but GaminGladiators went out early, and it was Fnatic who took the win. Not Moist were in an incredibly good position early on in this match but just didn’t see it through to the end like Fnatic did.
Both GaminGladiators and Alliance went into Match 7 with 50+ points, meaning either could take the tournament with a win. Things quickly moved onto Match 8 where we had six teams who could all take a win if they could get on top and had the skills to remain there until the end.
This might have been the most exciting match of the entire tournament. The final circle was filled with teams on Match Point, but somehow, TSM managed to beat them all and keep us going for yet one more round.
Right from the start, Match 9 really felt like the one. Alliance gave us all an incredible shock and awe moment as one player took out not one, not two, but three enemy players around the map’s train in a hattrick that I don’t even think they saw coming. But it wasn’t enough because LiquidAlienware managed to absolutely annihilate all six potential winners and go on to claim the match for themselves.
Entering Match 10 were eleven teams who could potentially win the tournament. At one point, Enter Force.36 was the only team not at Match Point in the final circle against five teams who could’ve won the match, but then SSG came along and took it for themselves.
I asked several people how many matches they thought the finals would go on for, and nine was the highest guess I was given. The ALGS Split 2 Playoffs 2024 ended on a massive high that I don’t think any of the fans of watching ALGS or playing Apex Legends will lose the buzz of anytime soon.
