- Phantolex is a new word game that’s out now on iOS
- Duke it out with an opponent to spell out a word as they counter you
- Call their bluff and win points, or see them use their perspicacity to their advantage
Words are great. Yeah, that’s all I’ve got. Alright, attempt at a clever opening aside, Phantolex is a newly-released game on iOS that takes a little-known word puzzler and puts it in the palm of your hand. Test your perspicacity and take on a phantom opponent as you seek to put together words.
How does Phantolex or the game it’s based on, Ghost, work? Well, you have a limited number of letters and must place them down. When you do, your opponent places their own letters around them. Your challenge is to create a legitimate, dictionary-defined word and win points. Think your opponent is bluffing and spelling nonsense? Call them out! But if they can write something that’s real, they win.
It’s an intriguing premise and one that’s instantly interesting. You need only look as far as our resident YouTube guru Scott’s coverage of the game below, and if you’re not instantly invested (whether that be in seeing what he comes up with or yelling “Spell Y! Spell Y!”) I don’t know how else to convince you.
Write that down
Word games are something that, while I’m not usually a fan of puzzle games, I find instantly interesting. Unfortunately being an Android gamer I won’t get the chance to get hands-on with Phantolex, but fingers crossed that this game turns out to be a success so I might be able to grab it soon.
