- Disney Step is a new AR-based location game
- It features, naturally, the Disney brand and collectibles
- Explore your own home town to find treasures and complete your collection
It’s rare that we see a major brand release a mobile game that manages to slip under the radar, but today’s subject certainly has. And that may be because Disney Step appears (for the time being) to be a Japan-only release. But what’s it all about? Well, let’s see what we can glean from the official site and preview trailer.
So right off the bat, we know Disney Step is an AR game. If the logo and name weren’t enough of a clue, the fact that it’s based around a treasure hunt in “your town” is a pretty good indication. It’s also confirmed in official sources, albeit translated so there’s always room for error.
A brief look at the other official source I found, which is the Japanese outlet Famitsu, shows a Pokémon Go-esque interface with your character moving around a representation of the local area’s map towards points of interest. It doesn’t appear to include any battling aspect, and thus we can reasonably assume it’s focused towards a younger audience.
Walk this way
It’s interesting to see Disney Step debut in such an under-the-radar manner. But then again, Japan is supposedly one of the most important markets for AR games, so it shouldn’t be surprising it’s set to debut there with an upcoming closed beta test. Hopefully, we might hear more about it in the near future.
