Balatro, the super-popular indie card game, is coming to mobile! The game will officially launch on September 26th for the iOS App Store, Google Play and Apple Arcade. The announcement came today alongside a surreal (and a little bit scary) trailer demonstrating the game’s unique appeal.
For those not in the know, Balatro has been one of the indie hits of 2024 thanks to its addictive gameplay. A card-battling, deck-building roguelike with a twist, you build up a deck of different, game-changing “joker” cards as you strive to beat ever-increasing odds (and scores) with different poker hands.
Balatro has been a massive success, topping over two million sales since its launch. So it’s no surprise that a mobile release, for an audience which is hungry for deck builders, has been hotly-anticipated from virtually all corners.

Despite a rocky start, including being dumped from the Nintendo eShop for allegedly promoting gambling, Balatro has proven to be another major indie hit. While it may be cold comfort for some prospective developers that their chances of being such a huge hit are so small, it does show that the indie landscape can produce bonafide blockbusters.
Personally speaking, much like Vampire Survivors, I’m excited to get a game like Balatro on mobile. I find certain games easier to concentrate on in the palm of my hand, and given how many hours Balatro has sucked away from people, I’m ready to while away my next long train journey.
