Jagex’s and Games By Malc’s RuneScape-inspired idle game, Melvor Idle, will be featured in 2024’s Green Game Jam. As part of this event, which is the fifth edition run by Playing for the Planet Alliance that seeks to promote environmental change, they’ll be producing a new in-game event called Melvor Active.
But what’s Melvor Active all about? Well, From September 9th to 30th, they’ll focus on three key skills: Food, Waste and Restoration. Based on the existing skills of Farming, Cooking and Crafting, they’ll highlight small changes that you can make in your daily life to make a change in preserving the planet. Melvor Active starts Monday the 9th of September!
If you’re not familiar with Melvor Idle it’s, well, an idle game based on Jagex’s most famous property of RuneScape. In this game, you find the skill-leveling systems and other aspects of RuneScape stripped down to their bare essentials, and put into the usual system of an idle game.
Stop idling
The decision to challenge players to make active decisions outside of an idle game is certainly a bold one. But I’d assume that Jagex knows they’ve got a large audience which they can connect with, and hopefully encourage to make small changes to help the planet. Still, I’m, not sure if people looking to destress with an idle game will go out and do more recycling, or sort their bins, but it’s a nice thought.
