SSDI monthly payment: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are two main federal disability benefits for those who can’t work due to a health condition or disability. They differ mainly in terms of work history.
SSDI is for individuals who have a significant work history and have paid Social Security taxes but are now unable to work due to a disability. On the other hand, SSI is designed for low-income individuals with little to no work history who are also unable to work because of a medical condition.

How SSDI is determined
The Social Security Administration calculates your Primary Insurance Amount (PIA) by considering your highest-earning 35 years of income, adjusting for inflation, and applying a specific formula. For 2024, the calculation involves taking 90% of your earnings up to $1,174, 32% of the earnings between $1,174 and $7,078, and 15% of any earnings beyond $7,078. This approach ensures that SSDI benefits are more generous for individuals with lower lifetime earnings.
