Storm Preparedness Tips for Your Home
Before a hurricane strikes, make sure your home is prepared to handle high winds, heavy rain and potential flooding.
- Stock up on essentials: Ensure you have non-perishable food items, water (one gallon per person per day for at least three days), batteries and a first-aid kit.
- Secure outdoor items: Patio furniture, grills and other items that could become projectiles during high winds should be moved indoors.
- Prepare for power outages: Keep flashlights, a battery-powered NOAA weather radio and extra batteries on hand. Fully charge your cell phone and consider having a backup phone battery.
Tips for Evacuating During a Hurricane
Evacuation is sometimes necessary. Make sure your family knows your evacuation plan.
- Plan your route: Know your evacuation routes in advance and be aware of alternate roads in case of traffic.
- Pack an emergency kit: Include essential items like medication, food, water, important documents, a first-aid kit and comfortable clothing.
- Gas up early: Fill your car’s gas tank before the storm hits — fuel shortages are common during evacuations.
- Stay informed: Pay attention to weather alerts and evacuation orders through your local government and weather apps.

Evacuating with Pets
Pets are often overlooked during hurricane preparations, but ensuring their safety is just as important.
- Records: Bring records of vaccinations and proof of ownership anywhere you bring your animals.
- Pet supplies: Food, water, leashes, carriers and any necessary medications.
- Pet-friendly shelters: While many shelters do not allow pets, Wags and Whiskers sometimes offers discounted pet boarding for evacuees. Always contact pet shelters early to ensure space is available.
Evacuating with Livestock
When evacuating, livestock owners must prepare to care for their animals while away. When evacuating livestock, have the following:
- Current lists and records of all animals, including their records of feeding, vaccinations, and tests. Make sure you have proof of ownership for all animals.
- Supplies for temporary identification of your animals, like plastic neckbands and permanent markers to label your animals with your name, address and telephone number.
- Handling equipment such as halters and appropriate tools for each kind of animal.
- Essential equipment including water, feed, buckets, and sanitation tools and supplies.
