Kelton Pyne made 33 saves and Corban Almen scored the shootout winner as the Regina Pats defeated the Edmonton Oil Kings 3-2 on Saturday.
Almen also scored his first goal of the season in the third period, while defenceman Tyson Buczkowski had the other tally for the Pats, who won their second straight game to improve to 3-2-0 in the Western Hockey League’s Eastern Conference.

Regina will now host exceptional status defenceman Landon Dupont and the Everett Silvertips on Wednesday (7 p.m., Brandt Centre) before two more home games on the weekend against the Swift Current Broncos (Friday, 7 p.m.) and the Spokane Chiefs (Saturday, 6 p.m.).
Regina Thunder
Sadik Sadik scored three rushing touchdowns and backfield partner Ryland Leichert added another as the Regina Thunder completed their Prairie Football Conference regular season with a 40-21 victory over the Calgary Colts on Sunday at Leibel Field.
The victory earned Regina hosting privileges for a PFC semifinal against the Colts this Sunday (1 p.m., Leibel Field).
Regina’s Shawn Green kicked four converts and two field goals. Regina completed its scoring with three safeties.
Calgary got touchdowns from Quinn Fedoroff, Jibreel Yahaya and Antoine Barrett, on an 82-yard punt return, with Robert Lasebnik converting all three majors.
Regina placed second in the PFC with a 6-2 record and Calgary was third at 4-4. In the other semifinal, the undefeated Saskatoon Hilltops (8-0) will continue trying to defend their Canadian junior football championship against the fourth-place Edmonton Huskies (3-5).

Regina Rams
After starting the season 2-0, the University of Regina Rams have now lost four straight games.
On Saturday at Mosaic Stadium, the Rams gave up a late field goal to fall 23-20 to the Calgary Dinos. Defensive back Jacob Tkachuk had a 71-yard pick-six to open the scoring for Regina, who held a 19-16 lead at halftime but could only manage one point in the second half.
Running back Marshall Erichsen had a big game for the Rams as he rumbled for a career-high 169 yards along the ground, while also catching six passes for 39 yards.
This week, the Rams are on a bye before returning to action Oct. 19 against the Saskatchewan Huskies.
Women’s soccer
The University of Regina Cougars women’s soccer team split their games on the weekend.
On a windy Saturday in Regina, the Cougars defeated the Lethbridge Pronghorns 2-0 with Peyton Enns and Presley Fredlund finding the back of the net for the Cougars.
On Sunday, Emma Lowe and Lennox Lockhurst scored for Regina in a 3-2 loss to the Calgary Dinos.
The Cougars (4-6-0), who trail the Saskatchewan Huskies (5-2-3) by six points for the final playoff spot, are set to face the Huskies on Friday in Saskatoon and Saturday in Regina, with both games getting underway at 7 p.m.

Women’s hockey
The Regina Cougars women’s hockey team opened up the Canada West season with back-to-back wins against the Saskatchewan Huskies.
On Friday night, Kaylee Dyer scored the overtime winner to give Regina the 2-1 victory before the Cougars clinched the sweep with a 1-0 victory on Saturday.
Kaitlyn Gilroy scored the game’s lone goal while Natalie Williamson made 23 saves for first career shutout.
Regina will now visit the MacEwan Griffins this weekend in Edmonton.
Men’s hockey
The Regina Cougars men’s hockey team dropped both of their games against the Saskatchewan Huskies to open the season.
Regina lost 7-1 on Friday and 6-2 on Saturday. Steven Kesserling notched a goal in each game for the Cougars, while Carson Whyte scored the other goal for Regina, who host MacEwan Friday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (5 p.m.) at the Cooperators Centre.
Canada West golf
Five University of Regina golfers are teeing it up at the Canada West Golf Championship this week at the Okanagan Golf Club in Kelowna.
Micah Tangjerd, Reece Kuski, Jackson Wingert, Carter Bell and Jacob Lipp will be competing in the 36-hole men’s tournament, which got underway Monday and wraps up Tuesday.

High school football
In Regina Intercollegiate Football League action, the Winston Knoll Wolverines topped the O’Neill Titans 45-7 while the Miller Marauders beat the LeBoldus Golden Suns 19-6.
Meanwhile, the Sheldon Williams Spartans narrowly got by the Martin-Luther Kings 8-7 while the Riffel Royals beat the Campbell Tartans 22-14, and the F.W. Johnson Wildcats blanked the Balfour Bears 30-0.
Rugby Canada
After beating France to open WXV 1, Saskatchewan product Gabrielle Senft and Team Canada picked up their second win of the women’s rugby tournament.
No. 2 ranked Canada beat Ireland 21-8 on the weekend and are now set to take on No. 1 ranked England on Saturday (8 p.m., TSN) at BC Place in Vancouver in a game that will determine the winner of this year’s WXV title.
Mixed curling
Shaun Meachem and his Swift Current Curling Club squad are set to represent Team Canada this weekend at the World Mixed Curling Championship in Scotland.
After winning the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship last year, Meachem, Kelly Schafer, Chris Haichert and Teejay Haichert earned the right to wear the maple leaf at worlds, which gets underway on Saturday and wraps up Oct. 19.

Canada will be in Group A alongside Czechia, England, Hungary, Latvia, New Zealand, Philippines and Türkiye in the 39-team international event.
Grand Slam of Curling
Rylan Kleiter and his Saskatoon curling squad claimed the Tier 2 title at the Grand Slam of Curling’s Tour Challenge on the weekend.
Team Kleiter, who finished the tournament 6-0, beat Norway’s Magnus Ramsfjell 6-5 in an extra end to win the Tier 2 event in the first Grand Slam event of the year.
In the women’s Tier 2 event, Halifax’s Christina Black won the women’s event.
In the Tier 1 final, Scotland’s Bruce Mouat won the men’s championship over Newfoundland’s Brad Gushue while Manitoba’s Kerri Einarson won the women’s title over Ontario’s Rachel Homan.
The next Grand Slam event is the Canadian Open set for Nov. 5-10 in Nisku, Alta.
