Georgia wide receiver Colbie Young was arrested by Athens-Clarke County police on Tuesday morning on misdemeanor charges of battery and assault on an unborn child. Per jail records, Young was booked at 4:18 a.m. on Tuesday morning and is currently incarcerated as of 8:30 a.m.
UGA has not responded to a request for comment on Young’s arrest.
A transfer from Miami, Young has played in all five of Georgia’s games this season. He has 11 receptions for 149 yards and 2 touchdowns, with his most productive game being a 3-reception, 57-yard outing against Alabama two weeks ago.
“He continues to get better,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said after the Tennessee Tech game in Week 2. “The one last week [against Clemson] was impressive. He continues to grow and get better, and we’re going to need him in our offense. We need him to be able to play even more snaps and be in the best shape of his life to play enough snaps.”
Young came to Georgia this offseason with plenty of experience and the hope of playing a significant role on an SEC contender.
The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Young ended the 2023 season as Miami’s third-leading receiver, and by the end of the regular season, Young had 47 receptions for 563 yards and 5 touchdowns for the Hurricanes. The 2023 season was his second in Miami, as his first year with the Canes saw him reel in 32 passes for 376 yards and 5 touchdowns.
A native of Binghamton, New York, Young began his collegiate career at Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pennsylvania. While there, Young hauled in 24 receptions for 472 yards and 9 touchdowns.
“I had seen Colbie before he even got here, his film from over there at Miami. He’s a good jump-ball guy,” cornerback Julian Humphrey said in March. “He’s been going up top over people, he’s a big guy and he’s going to be a big piece of us for this upcoming season.”
Young’s role in the offense became increasingly important following the departure of receiver Rara Thomas, who was dismissed following a July arrest on a felony charge of cruelty to children (second degree, family violence) and two misdemeanor charges of battery (family violence).
Young is the second Georgia player to be arrested during the 2024 season. Cornerback Daniel Harris was arrested on Sept. 12 on misdemeanor driving charges that included reckless driving, affixing materials that reduce the visibility of windows/windshield, no proof of insurance, operations of an unregistered vehicle without a current license plate/revalidation decal, and use of safety belts.
In total, Georgia has had seven players arrested since January 2024. This includes Thomas, Harris, running back Trevor Etienne (driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane/improper driving on road, and affixing materials that reduce the visibility of windows/windshield), receiver Sacovie White (reckless driving, one-way roadway), linebacker Smael Mondon (reckless driving, racing on highways/streets), and offensive tackle Bo Hughley (reckless driving, failure to maintain lane/improper driving on road).
