Who’s winning the trade period so far?
Hi Chris,
Who do you think so far looks like a winning team in the trading stakes. Are there some obvious standouts and if there are a couple of winners, who are the losing teams to date?
Cheers– Mark C
Hi Mark,
I’d say it’s too early to tell who’s winning or losing the trade period, given that not much has happened just yet.
Maybe check in later today when (hopefully) we’ve had some more deals go through!
Assessing the Jake Stringer-Giants fit
Can GWS light a fire under Stringer like they did with Hogan?
– Simon
Hi Simon,
I certainly wouldn’t put it past the Giants to spark something good in Jake Stringer.
I mentioned yesterday that the Giants need to leverage the fact that they’re in relative obscurity out of the Melbourne bubble, and Stringer is the type of guy who could use some time out of the spotlight.
In terms of on the field, he looms as the perfect foil for Jesse Hogan, really.
A forward line featuring Hogan, Toby Greene, Aaron Cadman, Brent Daniels and Stringer would have to be up there as maybe the best in the entire competition.
Stringer is coming off a pretty solid year – he kicked 42 goals in 23 appearances.
If you’re relying on him to be the focal point week-in, week-out, like Essendon were, you’re probably going to be disappointed with the results.
But the Giants already have that in Hogan, so Stringer can fit in nicely I think, where his contributions will really just be a bonus.
What exactly does Richmond want for Daniel Rioli?
when will the dan rioli trade be completed and what picks do you think Richmond will get for him
– Dean
Hi Dean,
It certainly looks like negotiations between the Tigers and Suns over the Daniel Rioli trade will be centered around pick No.6 in this year’s draft.
According to Nine’s Tom Morris, the Tigers want more as well.
What exactly that ‘more’ looks like will be the sticking point here.
Fremantle tables ‘very strong offer’ for Shai Bolton
We’ve got some news on Shai Bolton’s potential move to Fremantle!
Fremantle’s football boss Peter Bell has explained where negotiations currently sit with Richmond.
“We have been in a lot on discussions with Shai and hopefully that can come to fruition in the next week or so,” he told AFL Trade Radio.
“We have gone in with what we consider a very strong offer.”
‘Open dialogue’ confirmed over James Peatling deal
One proposed trade that’s been light on specifics is the Peatling to Adelaide deal. The suggestion seems to be that future picks will be involved, but how does that deal get done? I wouldn’t have thought Peatling would be worth much more than a third-round pick, given he’s hardly had a decent run in the team and is still largely unproven, as well as being out of contract, but I can see Adelaide paying more for him than that
– Thomas
Hi Thomas,
Ask and you shall receive because your namesake Thomas Morris, better known as Tom Morris, has some specifics on the James Peatling deal.
Carlton lands Collingwood’s premiership mastermind Graham Wright
Carlton has swooped on former Collingwood football boss Graham Wright as their next chief executive officer, delivering a stinging blow to their fierce AFL rivals.
The Blues are set to announce via a press conference shortly that Wright will be current Carlton CEO Brian Cook’s deputy before taking the reins full-time via a handover plan.
It is a massive coup for Carlton, with Wright, the mastermind behind Collingwood’s 2023 premiership, in heavy demand after quitting the Magpies following a leave of absence this year.
What will it cost to get Shai Bolton?
Chris my friend, Bolton is not worth 10 and 11 in isolation. Dockers will only pay that if they get something substantial back the other way like 24 with Bolton
– Rinso
Hi Rinso,
Yeah it’ll be an interesting trade negotiation. I’m sure Fremantle will have your view and ask for something back from Richmond.
The Tigers certainly look like they’ve got no shortage of picks, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they tack something on alongside Shai Bolton to get the deal done.
What exactly that is remains to be seen.
An update on James Peatling
Any update on what it will take for the crows to land Peatling?
– Ben
Hi Ben,
The latest reporting on James Peatling‘s move to Adelaide seems to suggest a future pick will be involved in the deal.
“Talks are expected to involve future picks, given the Giants are well stocked for 2024 selections following the compensation packages handed down for Harry Perryman and Isaac Cumming last week,” Riley Beveridge wrote on AFL.com.au.
The compensation delivered as part of Perryman and Cumming’s free agency moves has left the Giants with picks No.15, 16 and 21 inside the draft’s first round, with the club now expected to focus on future selections as part of the Peatling discussions.”
The latest on Daniel Rioli’s move to the Gold Coast
SEN’s Sam Edmund has offered up an update on Daniel Rioli‘s potential move to the Gold Coast.
“We can be outraged and we can slam the Gold Coast Suns and we can talk about all the mistakes they’ve supposedly made,” he said.
“They’ve never offered pick 23 with pick 6 for Daniel Rioli, it just has not happened.”
Mitch Lewis to Brisbane? Maybe not
Any truth to the rumor that Brisbane might be seeking to take Mitch Lewis off the hands of the Hawks (ACL and all)?
– Andrew
Hi Andrew,
I haven’t heard that one reported credibly anywhere at this stage so perhaps not.
Wouldn’t imagine the Hawks are in any hurry to move Mitch Lewis on after he kicked 36 goals in 15 games in 2023 and 37 goals in 15 games in 2022.
Still only 25 years of age too, heaps of potential.
What is Shai Bolton worth?
Been hearing this and that about what Shai Bolton is worth. As a Richmond fan, I think he’s an immensely talented player probably worth 2 firsts, but I’ve come across others saying he’s worth pick 10 at best, what are your predictions for how this deal will play out?
– Reggie Pizza
Hi Reggie!
So far it’s been Fremantle that’s been linked the most with Shai Bolton.
The Dockers have picks 10 and 11 and the most recent reports seem to indicate that they’ll package the two up to send to Richmond in a deal for Bolton.
I’d say that’s a pretty fair outcome for both parties.
Suns under the gun over reported trade for Daniel Rioli
Daniel Rioli has requested a move to the Gold Coast Suns, and so far reports indicate they’ll give their earliest first-rounder, No.6, to Richmond in that deal.
Kane Cornes doesn’t think that’s a price that seems appropriate.
“We have cried and sooked and moaned about Josh Battle giving St Kilda pick 8, but we aren’t talking about the fact people think Dan Rioli, who is 27 years old, being worth pick 6,” he told AFL Trade Radio.
“Why is there not an outcry on this one? This would be the most irresponsible trade since Jack Bowes.”
It’s certainly an interesting point Cornes makes. Rioli had an excellent season with Richmond, averaging 23.3 touches in 23 appearances this season.
But is it smart to give up such a prized draft asset for a player who plays one of the most replaceable positions in the game? I’m not too sure.
The rush to beat Tasmania!
Hey Chris. I love your blogging.
I’m really interested in Richmond, WC and North.
They are currently the lowest teams trying to climb up the ladder. With Tassie coming in soon, they will get a HEAP of draft picks in future drafts.
Which of these teams do you think can rebuild quickly before Tassie gets all the draft picks?
– Francis
Hey Francis, thanks for your kind words!
You’ve definitely got a good point about trying to beat Tasmania’s entry.
Teams know that the draft will get diluted for a few years towards the end of the decade, and it’s probably driving a lot of decision-making now.
I’m really high on North Melbourne. They were much more competitive after the bye and are now adding a group of veterans such as Jack Darling and Luke Parker, who have been in winning environments.
The trio of Harry Sheezel, George Wardlaw and Colby McKercher is ELITE, and they’ve got a top forward in Nick Larkey as well.
It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if they do a Hawthorn and climb up the ladder rapidly in 2025.
‘No one trusts you’: Matthew Lloyd’s harsh truth to Jake Stringer
Jake Stringer looms as one of the big names who could move today.
Stringer has a contract next year at Essendon, who have refused to budge on giving him an extra year he needs.
The 30-year-old has met with the Giants and by all accounts a move could happen today.
Stringer’s camp has shopped him around the competition, and the interest in him has been lacking to say the least.
Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd said it was an indicator of the level of trust surrounding Stringer.
“I see players who have nowhere near the ability of Jake Stringer who get two, three, four-years,” Lloyd told 3AW.
“I look at guys like Jack Graham, Alex Neal-Bullen, they don’t have the talent of Jake Stringer.
“That’s where Jake needs to be able to have people tell him that, whether it’s his management or people around him saying, ‘You should have another three years left in this game’.
“You should be receiving a two-year deal on good money, because there’s not many players who kick 42 goals in this game, but because of your inconsistency both on the field and off the field, I presume, no one trusts you.
“There is not the trust in you that people want to have, and even your own club doesn’t have it at the moment.
“The Bombers should be giving him two years, but they want to keep him hungry, or they would prefer that he finds another club.
“The Bombers internally wouldn’t be fussed. They probably hope he finds another club. which is telling them that he hasn’t got it right again, even at this age.”
Welcome!
Good morning everyone, and welcome to ABC Sport’s live trade blog!
We’ve got day three of the AFL trade period today, and let’s hope we’ve got some more movement.
We had a grand total of zero trades yesterday, but some absolutely elite chat with you all.
In case you missed it, here’s what took place. We discussed hypothetical trades, the worst trades of all-time, and Sri Lanka’s T20 hopes against the West Indies.
Truly the theatre of dreams.
