Hundreds enjoyed a free Thanksgiving meal at Windsor’s Downtown Mission on Thursday, thanks to a local businessman who supplied all the fixings for the festive gathering.
For the eighth year, Windsor businessman Sam Sinjari donated enough turkeys, hams and pounds of potatoes to feed hundreds at the feast.
“It’s not about what we have, but how we use it that counts,” said Sinjari.

“When we give, the genuine care and commitment we bring that truly matters. Through my years of helping organizations like the Downtown Mission, I’ve discovered that true generosity isn’t measured by the amount we give, but by the heartfelt intention we put behind our kind actions. I hope my efforts continue to inspire others to also give back.”
A team of volunteers and kitchen staff at the Downtown Mission prepared enough food Thursday to serve around 300 people facing homelessness and in need. The Mission’s dining room is located downtown Windsor at 875 Ouellette Ave.
“We want to remind everyone that everyone deserves something special,” said Rukshini Ponniah-Goulin, executive director of the Downtown Mission.
“Whether you’re in your own home or not, we’ll do what we can to provide you with that special meal and special environment.”

Ponniah-Goulin said donations from local philanthropists are crucial, especially as rising food costs make it increasingly difficult to provide the same number of meals to those in need.
In July, the Downtown Mission reduced its meal service to one community lunch. Whereas previously, anyone in the community could attend breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
