Mike Savage, who didn’t re-offer for HRM mayor this year, has secured a new gig.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in a release Sunday that Savage, the city’s mayor for the last 12 years, will be Nova Scotia’s next lieutenant-governor.
He will take over for Arthur J. Leblanc, who has served as the province’s lieutenant-governor since June 2017.
According to the Government of Canada, the lieutenant-governor typically serves for a period of five years, though the length of this term can vary.
Prior to being Halifax’s mayor, Savage served three terms as the MP for Dartmouth-Cole Harbour.
Earlier this year, he announced that he would not seek another term as mayor.
“I am confident that he will continue to serve Nova Scotians well and make important contributions in his new role,” Trudeau said in a media release.
It’s not known when Savage will be sworn in.
