BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) –This segment on The Three was paid for and sponsored by The Carlson Law Firm.
The Carlson Law Firm partner Kathryn Knotts stopped by The Three to share more information about auto insurance.
Knotts said the first level of coverage that you must have in the state of Texas to legally operate a motor vehicle on the roadway is liability insurance. she said drivers can purchase insurance coverage at different amounts.
“The minimum requirement in Texas is that you have what’s called a $30,000/$60,000 policy,” said Knotts. “I always encourage people to get as much insurance on their liability coverage, because that also will determine another part of insurance you have and that is your uninsured/underinsured motorist. You cannot purchase uninsured/underinsured motorists for more than what your liability coverage is.”
She encourages everybody to check for the uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance coverage.
“That’s going to protect you in two scenarios,” said Knotts. “A scenario when the person who hits you does not have insurance at all, and in that case, it will step up as uninsured motorist or underinsured motorist. And that’s when the person maybe only carries the state minimum insurance and it’s not enough to cover for all of your damages. You know, $30,000 sounds like a lot until you realize that a care flight bill could be more than $20,000.”
Knotts recommends purchasing as much uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage as possible to protect yourself, the people in your vehicle and your family.
“People ask me, well, what about comp and collision? That’s going to protect your damage to your vehicle if you hit a deer in the road, you hit a parked car, you hit a parking spot, something that causes damage, for which there’s no other insurance to pay for it,” explained Knotts.
