The undead came to life on Saturday as Scarehouse Windsor’s Zombie Walk and Parade made its much-anticipated return to the city’s downtown core.
“It’s a cool event that used to exist years ago and we’ve finally brought it back to downtown Windsor,” said Ward 3 Coun. Renaldo Agostino, who represents the neighbourhood.
“It’s going to take some time to get it going again but we’re starting here.”

Organizers estimated the walk attracted as many as 1,000 participants and spectators to Ouellette Avenue. And rather than eating brains, they collected donations for the Downtown Mission.

The event is not new to the city, but in recent years, organizers had to move the monsters out of the downtown core.
According to Shawn Lippert, co-owner of Scarehouse Windsor, last year’s charity event saw participants gather at Scarehouse and walk up Windsor Street to Jackson Park.
Excited to see how many people we can frighten
“I used to do the zombie walk way back in the day when it was a night (event) and we would start at the riverfront and walk up Ouellette Avenue,” said Stef Paulton, a zombie pirate collecting donations for the mission.
“When I found out the event was happening downtown this year, I got very excited. I love that it is back.
“I’m excited to see how many people we can frighten, even if it’s just a little bit.”

The decision to bring the zombie walk back to downtown is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the core, according to Agostino.
“I look forward to seeing people have a good time,” he said. “It’s great to see kids dressed up and the businesses excited.

“It’s great to see activity in the downtown core, and it is something that we can put together because we’ve got the right partners.”
