In August, police launched a high-visibility, community safety initiative in response to ongoing concerns about high crime levels in the 300 and 400 blocks of Glengarry Avenue.
Police said the area has faced “consistent challenges” related to violent crime.
In mid-September, 26 arrests — for assault, theft and failure to comply with orders — were made, leading to 48 charges over a three-day initiative by police.
And during a two-day community safety operation in August Windsor police arrested 24 people and laid 48 charges.
Recently released statistics show reports of violent crime in the area have decreased by 18.7 per cent, while reported drug crime in the vicinity has dropped by 37.5 per cent, according to Windsor Police Service officials.
During that same period, arrests in this neighbourhood related to violating bail conditions and other judicial orders have increased by 22.7 per cent.
The service partnered with Family Services Windsor-Essex and the Canadian Mental Health Association a couple months ago to establish office space inside the apartment complex at 333 Glengarry Ave.
Officers have maintained “a more meaningful and sustained presence in the area, allowing us to build stronger connections with residents, more quickly respond to issues as they arise, and ensure that support services workers in this neighbourhood can do their jobs safely,” police officials said.
The work is in collaboration with partner agencies from the health and human services sectors, aiming to fill the social gaps that contribute to the localized crime rate.
