A suspect is in custody after two reports of gunfire Saturday night on NC Central’s campus in Durham, reported ABC11, The News & Observer’s media partner.
At around 7:45 p.m., campus police issued an “active shooter alert” after gunshots were reported at the Debra Saunders-White Residence Hall parking lot at 2103 Fayetteville St.
According to NCCU’s daily crime and fire log, the incident happened as hundreds of students attended homecoming events scattered around campus.
Shortly after the alert went out, another alert informed the NCCU community that a suspect was in custody, ABC11 reported.
There were no reports of “gunshot-related” injuries.
The school lifted the alert at around 8:11 p.m., and it remains unclear what triggered the warning. No details have been released about the suspect in custody.
Then, at around 8:59 p.m., the school issued another active shooter alert, ABC11 reported. Gunshots were reported again on campus — this time at 231 Eagle Campus Drive, according to NCCU’s crime log.
Four people were hit by gunfire; three were hospitalized, ABC11 reported.
On Sunday morning at 2:03 a.m., school officials said the two incidents are “under active investigation” by state and local law enforcement.
“Please know that these incidents have weighed heavily on us all,” NCCU’s office of communications and marketing said in a statement.
“While we’re unable to share further details right now, we want to assure you that North Carolina Central University’s commitment to your safety and well-being is our highest priority. As soon as we’re able, we will provide additional information.”
